Master bedroom (upstairs!)

While we moved into our new upstairs master bedroom in mid-January, I realized we haven't really shared photos of the *nearly* finished product. Luckily, the talented Griffin Gibson got some great shots to commemorate our tenth anniversary. Here's one where you can see most of the room. We're really happy with how it turned out.

The little settee is directly in front of our bank of windows that overlook the backyard, and we have frequent hummingbird visitors. It's a favorite for evening conference calls :)

Six years later...

We won't say it's flown by.... Because it SO hasn't. But it's officially been six years since we bought our home sweet home, and we've certainly made some progress in that time :)

Accent wall

Shannon finished installing our accent wall upstairs this weekend, and it looks awesome! All the wood is recycled from our upstairs demolition and is original to the house. Love that we were able to reuse it in such a fun way! And rumor has it the barn door is from when our block was a farm back in the day (through the 40s best we can tell).

Chihuahua bedroom

Too much? Or not enough...

This was supposed to be a closet, but once it was framed out, it was just too cute- we're thinking a craft room or office... it's just off the master bedroom and Riley has officially taken it over, so whatever we decide we'll be sharing it with our chi baby. She sleeps on the window seat every night and keeps watch from here every day.

Tough gig ;)

The list goes on...

Here's our updated list:

  • Touch up paint and paint chimney
  • Get trim up (errywhere - on all the windows, baseboards, door frames... and speaking of doors)
  • Hang doors (5 to be exact - 3 sliding barn doors in master and bathroom, 2 panel doors in closets)
  • Outfit closets with hardware and cubbies
  • Install shower doors (glass) and hardware
  • Hang final light fixture above tub
  • Build out bookcase around the window in the loft
  • Trim out window seats in loft and front closet
  • Interior walls, and trim in sunporch
  • Exterior door to sunporch
  • Install gutters
  • Install brackets on front porch
  • Grading yard
  • Fencing, landscaping and hardscaping
And then it's on to the sunporch. And the gutters. And the brackets for the front portico. And the fence... and landscaping... and hardscaping.

Shower tiling completed

Good news and.... well, still good news, but a fun lesson learned we'll say :) The shower has been tiled and grouted! Now we're just letting it cure, then we'll seal it and get the fixtures (which match the tub fixtures) up.

When we picked our tile, we loved the look of this particular creamy grey and white carrara marble tile and ordered enough to tile the shower. This was almost a year ago.

Over the past several months, we've pulled several tiles from the boxes to coordinate grout colors, paint colors, fixtures, etc.

What we DIDN'T do was unpack all the boxes of tile and go through the pieces. Cut to the two-day process of tiling the shower while one of us (Shannon) was in Atlanta overseeing the tile crew, and the other of us (Mary) was in Toronto for a baby shower. And we realized we were getting a very 'Vegas' shower in a very 'beach cottage' house :)

Lesson learned, and while we both agree it's absolutely gorgeous - we also agree it might be just a little much for our taste. (For the record, we knew there would be some variation in the marbling, but we fell in love with the lighter more subtle tiles, like the top left one - just to give you an idea of what we were expecting :) Once the fixtures are in, and the glass doors are up, I'm sure we'll grow quite accustomed to showering like Greek gods... this could be bad for our egos. Stay tuned!

Rub-a-dub-dub

So I haven't made it so far as taking the stickers off the windows, but I HAVE broken in the tub. And I freakin LOVE it. Like. Averaging two baths a week love it. Yay for the little victories!

The big move

So upstairs isn't QUITE finished, but it's livable - and we decided to take the plunge and move into our new master suite a little early. Mary's sisters were in town for her birthday weekend, and we figured that was as good a time as any. It worked out  great with Ali & Liz having their own bedrooms and bathroom downstairs and us having our own space upstairs. And it's been great living in our new space before the finishing touches (doors, trim and closet build-out) are all final so we can tweak some final details as needed based on how we're using the space.

Here's a sneak peek of the master suite - hard to capture everything in photos, but hopefully you get the idea.

So while we're enjoying our new space, we're not quite in the home stretch. We still need to:
  • Touch up paint and paint chimney
  • Get trim up (errywhere - on all the windows, baseboards, door frames... and speaking of doors)
  • Hang doors (5 to be exact)
  • Outfit closets with hardware and cubbies
  • Tile the shower and install doors and hardware
  • Build out bookcase around the window in the loft
  • Trim out window seats in loft and front closet
  • Hang final light fixture above tub
And then it's on to the sunporch. And the gutters. And the brackets for the front portico. And the fence... and landscaping... and hardscaping. You get the picture. The list goes on.

Happy new year :)
